Learning to Grow, Growing to Learn

Only at Community Day School do students step outside every day to learn core academic concepts and essential life skills through hands-on agriculture. Our Papa Ed and Mimi Rosenthal Kibbutz Sustainability Garden and Outdoor Classroom is a vibrant learning space where children of all ages grow fresh produce, connect with the natural world, and share the harvest with our broader community.

From preschoolers planting seeds and exploring the wonders of soil, sun, and rain, to older students tending, harvesting, and tasting fruits, vegetables, and flowers, the garden is a living classroom that cultivates curiosity, responsibility, and joy.

Because our campus is completely pesticide-free, everything grown—from the vegetables in the garden to the carambolas, mangos, and avocados in the “Remember Me” Orchard—is safe to eat straight from the vine or tree. It’s a daily reminder that healthy food, sustainability, and community are all deeply rooted in the CDS experience.

All Community Day School students spend a minimum of one hour outside every day!
